Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential Program

Earning your Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential through Hope International University’s College of Education program enables students to earn a teaching credential for a career in California public schools, 7 - 12年级. The program provides a background in theory, 原则, 材料, and teaching methodology for successful application in classroom settings. The emphasis prepares and entitles individuals to teach students who are English Learners (ELs). 

Preliminary Single Subject Credentials are available in the following statutory subjects: English, 健康科学, Languages other than English, 数学, 音乐, Physical Education, Science and Social Science

During and following completion of the Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential students will: 

• Demonstrate subject matter competence
• Develop classroom management skills
• Exemplify Christian leadership in the classroom

College of Education students seeking the Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential must meet the following requirements prior to student teaching:

• Fingerprint/Live Scan
• CTC Certificate of Clearance 
• CPR/First Aid Certification

• 3.0 GPA in Graduate Level Courses 

Additional Criteria

Students seeking the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential must meet the following additional criteria prior to submission of application for the credential:

• Passing score on Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) 

The Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential program will be completed after 30 units.

• EDU6321 Curriculum Development and Instructional Design for Secondary School Teachers – 3 units
• EDU6511 Language and Literacy Education in Secondary Schools – 3 units
• EDU6512 Disciplinary/Interdisciplinary Methods of Teaching in Secondary School – 3 units
• EDU5810 Student Teaching – 5 units
• EDU5890 Advanced Student Teaching - 5 units
• EDU5910 Student Teaching Seminar - 1 unit
• EDU5911 Advanced Student Teaching Seminar –1 unit

CTC Accreditation:

HIU’s Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential program has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). This additional professional accreditation supplements the university’s regional accreditation by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
